Maine, the northeastern most state in our nation, is known for its rocky coastline, delicious lobster, abundant moose, and stately lighthouses. Of its 1.3 million residents, the large majority live along the coast, with Portland Metro area comprising a little over half a million people. As with many New England states, the number of evangelical Christians is low. Pew Research lists it at 15 percent. A recent Gallup poll shows that church attendance in Maine is 27 percent – third lowest in the United States. But God is doing many great things among the pastors and church planters in Maine. North Carolina Baptists now have opportunity to make a difference in this beautifully rugged, yet spiritually poor state.
